rock and a hard place

Management is about the tough decisions.  Fire or continue training.  Negotiate or walk away.  Hillary or Trump.  Decision-making is easiest at the margins.  When an absolute must-hire walks through your door, it’s easy to give an offer.  When a deal is win-win, it’s a no-brainer.   But it’s the grey area, the middle of the bell curve, that throws us for a loop.  And further yet, it’s how we handle the lose-lose scenarios that makes us great.

When you screw the pooch on a client deliverable there can often seem like no great resolution.  Perhaps you have to eat the cost.  Perhaps you can provide another added value.  In the end, no decision is going to be easy but it is these rock and a hard place decisions that make us stronger, better managers.  Action trumps inaction — when you find yourself stuck, make a decision and learn to live with the consequences.
